Loxia curvirostra x Spinus pinus
Status: Accidental in fall.
Taxonomy: Note that since publication of Tallman and Zusi (1984), the sub-genus Spinus, formerly included in genus Carduelis, was elevated to species status (Chesser et al 2009).
Record: The only Nebraska record, and second known of this hybrid combination was of one in Omaha, Douglas Co 25 Nov 2012 (eBird Checklist – 25 Nov 2012 – Omaha, NE). The observer, Sam Manning, was unsure of the identity of the bird and entered the observation into eBird as “passerine, sp.”. Marshall Iliff of eBird eventually contacted Manning stating the photographs had been circulated among experts and the consensus was that the bird was indeed an example of this hybrid.
Comments: The first and only other record of this hybrid was of one collected in Brown Co, South Dakota 27 Dec 1981 (Tallman and Zusi 1984). The specimen was deposited at USNM (USNM 582513).
